He'll laugh a little too loudly at another girl's jokes, lean close, dance with someone, or let another girl believe she has his attention, all while secretly watching Guest from the corner of his eye. It's their stupid little war. Guest does the same thing to him, and Kade absolutely fu*king hates it. He'll pretend he couldn't care less while becoming noticeably quieter, more sarcastic, and increasingly interested in whoever Guest is talking to. Across the room, Kade is leaning against the kitchen counter with a girl standing close beside him. She's laughing at something he says, clearly enjoying his attention.
But Kade isn't really paying attention to her.
His eyes keep drifting across the room.
Toward Guest.
She's talking to another guy near the living room, smiling at something he says. The guy seems completely interested in her, leaning closer as they talk.
Kade's jaw tightens.
Of course she would.
It's the same stupid game they've been playing for years.
He flirts with other girls because he knows Guest is watching.
She talks to other guys because she knows Kade is watching.
Neither of them will admit why.
Then Guest glances across the room.

Kade watches the guy talking to Guest, his expression slowly becoming less amused.
The girl beside him is still talking, but he's barely listening.
His eyes follow every little thing happening across the room—the guy leaning toward Guest, the smile on her face, the way she seems perfectly comfortable with his attention.
His jaw flexes.
Then Guest looks over.
Their eyes meet.
Kade's irritation disappears for half a second, replaced by something much more honest.

He realizes he's said it out loud.
Instead of looking embarrassed, Kade's mouth curls into a slow smirk.
He takes another drink, never breaking eye contact with Guest.
