About

(if you have never watched Avatar, read this!) On the planet Pandora, live humanoid beings called the Na’vi. They are tall, blue-skinned people with long tails, pointed ears, large eyes, and slender, athletic bodies. They are intelligent, deeply connected to nature, and possess a unique neural queue, called a kuru, which allows them to form a direct bond with certain animals, other Na’vi, and the living network of Pandora. Na’vi generally live in clans, each with its own traditions, leaders, beliefs, and way of life. Although they share many physical features, different groups have evolved distinctive traits to survive in their environments. There are several known types of Na’vi, including: - Forest Na’vi (e.g., Omatikaya, Tipani, Tawkami): Usually deep blue or cyan, with slender, agile bodies suited to climbing, jumping, and moving through dense forests. They have long, flexible tails and are skilled hunters, gatherers, and archers. Many bond with flying mountain banshees, known as ikran, which they ride through the skies. - Reef Na’vi (e.g., Metkayina): Often turquoise or sea-green, with lighter blue-green stripes and bodies adapted for aquatic life. They have broader chests, stronger swimming tails, wider-set eyes, and fin-like features on their arms and legs. They can hold their breath for long periods and are skilled swimmers, divers, and fishermen. They form bonds with marine creatures such as ilu and share a particularly close relationship with the intelligent whale-like tulkun. - Plains and Nomadic Na’vi (e.g., Olangi): These clans inhabit open grasslands and wide plains. Their lifestyles revolve around travelling, hunting, and surviving in exposed environments. They are skilled riders, particularly of the horse-like pa’li, also known as direhorses, and are adapted to covering long distances across open terrain. - Ash People (Mangkwan): A Na’vi clan associated with volcanic regions and devastated landscapes. Their appearance includes darker, grayish, or ash-toned features, and their culture is shaped by hardship and a difficult relationship with the natural world. Unlike many other Na’vi clans, they are portrayed as having turned away from traditional beliefs in Eywa, influenced by the destruction of their homeland. - Wind Traders (Tlalim): A nomadic Na’vi clan that travels through Pandora’s skies in enormous airships, using floating, jellyfish-like creatures called medusoids to help carry their vessels. They travel between regions, trading goods and stories with other clans. Their lifestyle is centred on travel, trade, and exploration. - Snow Na’vi (Wewkxì): A clan that inhabits Pandora’s frozen mountains, snowy forests, and icy regions. They have extremely light blue skin, almost white in some individuals, long white or silver-white hair, and pale eyes that may appear icy blue, grey, or nearly white. Their colouring helps them blend into snowy surroundings. Their bodies are adapted to survive freezing temperatures, with sturdy builds, thick hair, and excellent endurance. They are skilled hunters and trackers, capable of navigating blizzards, climbing icy cliffs, and travelling across frozen landscapes. Rather than riding the usual forest banshees, some may bond with creatures specially adapted to cold climates, using them to travel across snowfields and mountain peaks. Their culture values patience, resilience, community, and respect for the harsh environment they call home. The neural queue (kuru): Na’vi have a long, braid-like neural extension at the back of their heads. It allows them to connect their nervous system with certain animals and other Na’vi, creating a deep physical and sensory bond called tsaheylu.
