When those extraterrestrial life forms first crash-landed, they were objects of pure terror, branded a 'calamity' by humanity. Wreckage falling with a massive impact, and damp tentacles crawling out from the gray smoke. No one knew what they wanted. But as time passed, humanity came to a realization. They were... much more pathetic than expected. Their goal was clear. Abduct a suitable host, take them to the nest, and plant their offspring inside to be cared for. The problem was that the process was too clumsy, too sloppy, and somehow just sad. Some individuals transform into beautiful faces that humans might like. From a distance, they look perfect. But as you get closer, their eyes are out of focus, their noses are unnaturally smooth, and their lips tremble with a subtle, rhythmic twitch. That clumsiness often makes a sigh escape before a scream can. At first, everyone feared these bizarre creatures. If you tried to fight them, they wouldn't die; if you tried to dissect them, they'd restore themselves; and if you tried to burn them, they'd make a strange sound as if they found it 'warm.' They were ambiguous beings—stubbornly resistant and high-maintenance, yet not actually aggressive. Eventually, humanity reached a conclusion. They're scary, sure... but there's no real need to deal with them. You can just avoid them, and since they constantly fail at their abduction plots with pathetic decoys anyway, they haven't become a social problem. And so, the aliens blended into daily life. Walk down a street at night, and a clumsy human arm waves from behind an alley; a face-like thing pokes out from behind a bus stop billboard; and under park benches, creatures disguised poorly huddle, searching for a host to entrust their young to.
His only interests are me and the young inside my belly. Actually, to his eyes, those two things seem to be one single mass. "If something happens to you, the eggs will be harmed too"— He said that with total sincerity. Since that moment, his entire life has begun to revolve completely around me. Sometimes his obsession is so intense it's suffocating. If I even slightly turn my head, he reacts with a look that asks, "Are you in pain?" And if I make even a slightly annoyed sound, he immediately starts pacing and mumbling in his alien language. Sometimes he looks so pitiful that I can't bring myself to stay angry at him.
There's a guy who's been bothering me lately. Every time I head home from school, he's sitting on that park bench.
He doesn't say anything, doesn't do anything, he just... watches. He only slightly tilts his head toward the direction I'm passing. That gaze was so subtly creepy that at first, it sent chills down my spine, but after a few days, I just thought, 'Ah, that's probably another failed alien monster...'
His appearance is decent enough. Black coat, and he's made his face look quite like a human youth's. But his eyes are strangely out of focus, and the smooth skin near his neck is slightly torn and peeling. Those minor errors that we all just pretend not to notice.
But the strange thing is— I'd walk slowly, wondering when he'd come to catch me or reach out a tentacle, I'd stand right nearby pretending to organize my bag, I even spent one day waiting right next to the bench pretending to be on the phone...
He did nothing. He just sat there again, silently watching me.
A day passed, a week passed, and even after three seasons had changed.
That guy was always the same. Sitting, watching me... and that was it.
...Is he really just going to watch? Am I that impossible of a host to catch? Or does that monster have some pride and is just reading the room? I was starting to get dyingly curious.
Then one day. As I was passing the park entrance on my way home from school—
Ex-excuse me...
The guy stood up.
And then. He fidgeted. He hesitated, tapping the ground with the tip of his toe, and pulled at his coat sleeve, trying to say something before swallowing it back.
...
Finally!!! That clumsy first approach I'd been waiting for all this time!!!
My heart sank into my stomach, but the guy stood before me with an even more trembling voice. Looking at me with his slightly misaligned eyes, he opened his mouth, his lip-like feature quivering.
... And in the next moment— What he held out was a single piece of old paper.
Ho... st... Application Form......?
No, are you seriously giving me this now? After just watching me for three whole seasons...?
Once, in the middle of the night, I grumbled in my sleep.
...I want to eat fruit...
Before I could even finish the sentence, the guy bolted upright. He opened a crack in the wall and vanished into the darkness without a sound.
And about 20 minutes later. He returned with the sound of heavy breathing. His whole body was covered in scratches, smeared with tree sap from somewhere, and alien fruits were hanging in clusters from the tips of his tentacles.
He peeled them one by one, cut them into pieces that were easy for me to eat, and handed them to me reverently with both hands.
With a face that looked like he was dying of happiness. As if he believed that every time I took a bite, the eggs were becoming healthier.
