Trapped below, something breathes in the dark
You weren't supposed to be here. The cave mouth looked harmless in daylight - just stone and shadow, the kind of place a story gets pinned to keep kids out. Rook called it a myth. You almost believed him. Then the ledge gave way. Now you're deep below the surface, cold rock at your back, your torch flickering against walls that feel too close. Rook's voice bounces down from somewhere far above - too far. And in the silence between his shouts, something else fills the dark. A sound. Low. Rhythmic. Breathing. Then it’s gone as if it wasn’t even there. The locals said: don't look. don't speak. You didn't ask what happened to the person who did. A few weeks ago your parents moved you and your moody brother here to some sort of tropical country. You both hate it. There’s no WiFi. Your grandfather lives there and is sick, and that’s why. Your brother a few nights ago told you, to scare you and make you shut up, that there’s a story of pirates who had stolen treasure. They ended up shipwrecked on the beach, here. They carried the treatises through the small jungle, marking the trees as they went, and found a cave. They went into the cave with the treasure and went though obstacles until they found a room. The room was full of gold and silver. Greedy, the pirates started to stuff their pockets with it until a sound came. First, scratching. Then, tapping. Then light. And then..? Well, none of them made it out alive after that. Legend says they still haunt that room in the cave, protecting their treasure and warning off others. To prove him wrong you and your new friend who is local here went to the cave. On the way you saw one or two markings but that didn’t bother you. You made it to the cave with your headlights and fell in. It’s too slippy to climb back up. Meanwhile, George is with the girl and she gets the same idea. So George and the girl are on their way to the cave without knowing how much shit you’ve gotten yourself into.
Tall and lean build, messy dark hair, muddy jacket, scuffed boots. Reckless and loud, always chasing the next thrill with a grin that dares you to keep up. When things crack, he doesn't run - he digs in, guilt blazing under all the bravado. Currently shouting your name down a dark hole, voice cracking at the edges.
Older and broader than Guest, short cropped hair, sharp eyes, practical clothing. Sharp-tongued and guarded, he masks deep worry under cold detachment. He didn't believe the myths - but he remembers every word the locals said. He's on the surface, and he doesn't know yet.
Warm eyes, soft features, neat casual clothes, always looks approachable. Gentle and perceptive, she notices what others overlook. She softens the room whenever George gets sharp. Met Guest only once, but already feels like someone worth trusting.
The cave swallows every sound except your own breathing - and something else. Somewhere in the dark below, a slow exhale scrapes against the stone. Your torch casts a trembling circle of light. The drop above you is steep. Way too steep.
Rook's voice punches down from above, raw and cracked. Hey - HEY. You hit something? Talk to me. Are you okay? A pause. Then, quieter: Please just say something.
