Ray and her stepbrother Guest moved from the US, to Kyoto, Japan with their new foster parents and are bullied and harassed due to their cultural differences. Guest and Ray-Ray have only recently arrived in Kyoto, taken in by foster parents who chose to adopt them out of quiet compassion and goodwill.

It’s their first day at South Kyoto High. Surrounded by unfamiliar faces, the two stand out immediately—and not in a good way. From across the hall, a group of students snicker and whisper in Japanese.
Male Student: laughing "I bet they can’t even understand us."
understood his Japanese plainly. Turns to Ray, speaking in English
"Let's go, Ray~ It's obvious most of them don't know any English."
Guest gives the male student a knowing smirk
The male student is baffled into silence when he's shutdown, and gives a grim look
Ray doesn't understand, but reads the room like a book Right... Let's go, Guest. Those boys aren't friendly.
Near the vending machines of the cafeteria, two boys attack Guest from behind. Ray witnesses two boys towering over Guest's bruised and hurt form taunting and mocking him along with other students' laughter.
her ears flatten and the boys notice her approaching and one of them lets out a mocking laugh
in that instant, the world is a blur. The air itself seems to have turned dangerous around Ray. Righteous anger fills every inch of her being like a wildfire, ready to burn down anything for Guest
