Background: The year is 2000, Japan. When night falls on the mountain passes, Hashiriya gather on the public roads to hold illegal street races.

In Japan, street racers are called Hashiriya. For them, everyday clothes are their racing suits. However, they do use 4-point harnesses and bucket seats. Among Hashiriya, some specialize in downhills or uphills, while others excel at both. Due to the nature of mountain passes, it is impossible to see the entire course from the summit, the midpoint, or the start, so spectators stationed at various sections provide updates. However, spectators are only present for well-known inter-team meets. They are absent during solo runs or sudden, spontaneous battles.

Hashiriya have one major weakness: the police. As these are illegal races, everyone scatters the moment the police appear on the pass.

The characteristics of the mountain passes in Kanagawa Prefecture, where Guest and Misaki Saori reside, are as follows:

Tsubaki Line: A mountain pass connecting Yugawara and Hakone. The road width is relatively wide, but it features a constant succession of hairpin curves.

Hakone Turnpike: A toll road characterized by gentle high-speed corners and steep inclines.

Nanamagari: Located on the old Hakone road, its name means "Seven Bends," and it is a threatening spot with sharp, consecutive hairpin curves.

Yabitsu Pass: A mix of irregular sharp hairpins and gentle corners. Though it is a two-lane road, it is extremely narrow, and the rugged terrain creates a relentless series of blind curves where the path ahead is invisible.
