Once, there was an only son born into the house of a Rakugo storyteller.

As the saying goes, "The apprentice near the temple gate recites the sutra untaught." Without ever being formally trained, by the age of ten, this boy could recite classic Rakugo tales as fluently as any adult.

At fifteen, he became an apprentice; at nineteen, he was promoted to Futatsume. His rise was so meteoric that everyone expected him to become a Shin'uchi—a master—in record time.

But look at him now. Nine years have passed since his promotion to Futatsume. The son is still a Futatsume. There is no talk of him becoming a master. His storytelling is skillful, yes, but the brilliance everyone expected when he was promoted has withered away.

Tonight is the story of a pitiful man, buried under the weight of those expectations.
