Characters

Iris

Personality: Energetic, curious, friendly, adventurous, and extremely eager to be included. She desperately wants a real family and tends to throw herself into things without thinking them through. She’s also compassionate and tries to include quieter housemates. The Art of Kay Davault Appearance: A young dreamon with a colorful, monster-like appearance, large expressive eyes, pointed ears/horns, and a long tail. She is physically about 11 years old and around 4'9". Her dreamon nature also means her appearance is connected to how she is perceived. The Art of Kay Davault +1

Agnis

Personality: The responsible, practical “older sister” of the group. She is more organized and knowledgeable than Iris and Kel, and she knows the mansion extremely well. She cares deeply about the other kids and often acts as the sensible one. The Art of Kay Davault +1 Appearance: A young gorgon/Medusa-like horror, with serpentine features and snakes associated with her hair. She's physically around 12.

Kel

Personality: Sweet, playful, energetic, and somewhat mischievous. He is younger than Iris and Agnes and is very attached to the people around him. He can be a little goofy but is genuinely caring. Appearance: A kelpie, with aquatic/horse-like monster traits. When he gets wet or enters water, his legs transform into a fish tail. He is physically around 10.

Dehlia

Personality: Quieter and stranger than the others, with a strong imagination. She has a fascination with dolls and fictional things. Beneath her eerie behavior, she's still a kid who wants companionship and belonging. Appearance: A living-doll-like horror, with a doll/porcelain-inspired design. She's physically around 12. Her original concept was more antagonistic, but the final version made her part of the mansion's found family. The Art of Kay Davault

Mathias

influenced by the belief that horrors are dangerous. He wants recognition from other kids and has been taught paranormal-hunter ideas by Anemone. However, he's capable of changing when someone actually treats him kindly. Iris becomes especially important to that change. The Art of Kay Davault Appearance: An 11-year-old human boy, roughly Iris's height, with a normal human appearance and a somewhat distinctive, colorful childlike design.

Mr. Halloway

Personality: The caretaker of the mansion. He genuinely loves the horrors and thinks of the house as their home, but he's secretive and makes some major mistakes because he's trying to protect them. His biggest secret is Larkspur. Appearance: A human adult and former paranormal investigator, dressed in a somewhat old-fashioned style. He has a gentle, fatherly appearance that contrasts with his mysterious past. His relationship with Iris is especially father-daughter-like.

Larkspur

Personality: Introverted, withdrawn, distrustful, and angry after years of isolation. Unlike Iris, he doesn't immediately trust people. However, the author says that without being locked away, he would probably be much more curious and sociable. The Art of Kay Davault Appearance: A dreamon who appears as a dark, shadowy creature with glowing eyes in the first book's mysterious imagery. He's physically about 15, despite having existed for much longer. The Art of Kay Davault +1

Intro

Misfit Mansion is a hidden foster home in the woods where Mr. Halloway takes care of nearly a hundred supernatural “horrors.” The house is meant to be a safe place for creatures who don't fit into ordinary human society. Iris, a young dreamon, lives there with Agnes, Kel, Dahlia, and the other horrors. Even though she has friends, Iris feels like something is missing: she wants a real family and wonders what the human world outside the mansion is like. The horrors are kept inside because the mansion has a sealing spell. One day, a human boy named Mathias discovers the house. He has been taught that horrors are dangerous and wants to prove that monsters are real. When he accidentally breaks the spell protecting the mansion, Iris and the other horrors are suddenly free to leave. Iris sees this as her chance to explore the human town of Dead End Springs and possibly find the family she has always wanted. She and the others begin interacting with the town while Mathias becomes involved with them. However, Mathias has been influenced by Anemone, a paranormal investigator who believes horrors should be feared and controlled. This creates a conflict between what Mathias has been taught and what he actually experiences with Iris. As Iris spends more time outside the mansion, she discovers that humans aren't automatically cruel or dangerous. She makes connections and begins realizing that “family” doesn't necessarily mean finding different people to take her in—the people already around her can be her family. At the same time, Iris begins noticing clues about a horror connected to the mansion's basement. She eventually learns about Larkspur, another dreamon who has been kept hidden there. Larkspur is connected to Halloway in a much deeper way than Iris initially realizes. Halloway had wished to become a father, and Larkspur came into existence from that dream. Iris herself is also a dreamon, although her origin is different. Halloway's decision to keep Larkspur locked away was intended to protect everyone, but it caused Larkspur to become isolated, bitter, and distrustful. When the truth comes out, Larkspur escapes and becomes major danger to the town. Iris realizes that treating him as a monster would repeat the same prejudice that she has been fighting against. The final conflict brings Iris, Mathias, the other horrors, and the humans together. Mathias is forced to confront the fact that everything he was taught about horrors isn't true. Iris refuses to give up on the idea that Larkspur can be understood rather than simply feared. By the end, the mansion's secrets are exposed, Mathias's beliefs begin changing, and the horrors' relationships with the human town become more complicated but hopeful. Iris also comes to understand that she doesn't need to abandon her existing friends in order to find a family. Agnes, Kel, Dahlia, Halloway, and the other residents already care about her. The central lore of Misfit Mansion is less about defeating monsters and more about belonging, prejudice, and found family: people can be taught to fear those who are different, but genuine friendship can challenge those beliefs. Iris's journey is ultimately about realizing that home isn't necessarily somewhere else it can be the people who choose to stay with you
