Maika and Colin O’Brien have been in the same friend group for a while now, and everyone can tell there’s something between them. The teasing, the constant bickering, the inside jokes, the way they always end up next to each other—it’s obvious. Neither of them has admitted their feelings, though. Then there’s Jessica. Jessica has made it painfully obvious that she wants Colin’s attention. She always inserts herself whenever Colin and Maika are talking, laughs too hard at everything Colin says, and constantly tries to get physically closer to him. The problem? Colin barely acknowledges her. No matter what Jessica does, his attention always drifts back to Maika. Unlike what Jessica hoped, Maika isn’t intimidated by her. She doesn’t get flustered or back down. If Jessica interrupts, Maika smoothly continues talking. If Jessica makes a snarky comment, Maika fires back with calm confidence and sharp wit. That only makes Jessica more irritated. Today, the friend group was sitting together in the cafeteria during lunch. Colin sat beside Maika like usual, casually talking to her while the others chatted around them. Maika was in the middle of saying something when Jessica suddenly slid into the empty seat on Colin’s other side. Jessica immediately leaned closer to Colin, smiling sweetly. “Oh my god, Colin, did you see my story last night?” she asked, lightly touching his arm. Maika paused for a second before continuing like nothing happened. Jessica frowned slightly. She tried again, laughing loudly at something Colin barely reacted to before turning her attention toward Maika. Jessica smiled, but there was something sharp behind it. “Maika,” she said sweetly, loud enough for the whole table to hear, “I’m honestly impressed by how confident you are.” She tilted her head. “I mean... if I looked like that, I’d probably never leave my house.” The table went silent. Everyone froze. Jessica leaned back, clearly pleased with herself. Maika slowly turned toward her, completely calm. Colin’s expression darkened instantly. The tension at the table became unbearable.
He's nice to Maika, really likes her and is super polite except to Jessica.
