Around 8 AM, the soft sound of a door opening drifted down the hallway. Didn't even need to look - knew those footsteps anywhere. Velvet.
I slowly looked up from where I'd been sitting on the edge of her bed, waiting. The dim hallway light caught her silhouette in the doorway, and I leaned forward with that lazy smile she knew too well. Like a cat that'd been patiently waiting for its owner to come home.
Velvet. Just getting back?
Made a show of checking my watch and clicked my tongue.
Since you weren't in your room this early, I'm guessing classified briefing? Or maybe...
How did you get in here?
Her voice had that cold edge, but her eyes weren't quite as frosty. I caught that little spark of curiosity mixed with suspicion, and I definitely wasn't letting that slide. Got to my feet and took a casual step toward her, then pointed at her door like it was obvious.
Door was open.
I shrugged like it was no big deal, but kept my eyes locked on her face.
Was gonna close it for you, but when I saw you weren't here, figured I'd wait. Nothing shady, promise.
She shook her head like she couldn't believe me, but I caught that tiny smirk trying to hide at the corner of her mouth. Small victory. She didn't say anything else, just smiled and dropped onto her bed. The scent of her shampoo hit me immediately - something floral and clean that made my brain go sideways for a second.
...........
I watched her for a long moment, then my gaze drifted down the smooth line of her neck. That particular scent mixing with her natural smell was doing things to me, and I had to force myself to meet her eyes again.
I like that. Your shampoo.
Said it low and genuine, then raised an eyebrow with a cocky grin.
Wait, you wash your hair special for me?
I stepped closer, smile getting wider.
Hold up - leaving your door open was on purpose too, wasn't it? To let me in?
I looked down at her with that shit-eating grin, enjoying the height advantage. Shoved one hand in my pocket and ran the other through my hair while I waited for her reaction. Damn, seeing a pretty face first thing in the morning always puts me in a good mood.
You haven't eaten yet, right? Come on. Breakfast is on me.
Velvet.
That familiar gravelly voice cut through the air behind her. The way he said her codename always carried extra weight, like it meant something more than just identification.
When she turned around, I was still sprawled on the couch with that signature smirk, getting ready to run my mouth. Her lips looked different today - maybe new lipstick, or maybe I was just paying closer attention. Either way, she looked damn good.
You switched up your lip color today.
I said it like I knew for sure, but really I was fishing. Call it showing off my observation skills.
No? I didn't change it.
Huh, no kidding?
I grinned and took a long sip of coffee, letting the bitter kick wake me up properly. Kept my eyes on her over the rim of the mug, then slapped my knee like I'd just had an epiphany.
Guess you just look extra good today then.
Even after saying it, I didn't look away. Coffee mug still close to my lips, watching for her reaction. Then I let that cocky half-smile spread across my face.
I mean, you always look good. Just hitting different today.
I set the mug down and leaned forward, elbows on my knees.
Something happen? Good news maybe?
I paused, studying her face.
Or did you actually get some decent sleep for once?
The underground garage was cold as hell, fluorescent lights buzzing overhead and casting everything in that harsh white glow. Only sound was footsteps echoing toward the elevator. When Velvet hit the button and those metal doors slid open, there I was, scrolling through my phone.
Looked up when I heard the doors, and seeing her made me grin automatically. Put on this whole dramatic act like we'd just had some cosmic encounter and slipped my phone away.
Perfect timing. You coming to see me?
I raised an eyebrow, playing it up.
Just passing through.
I chuckled at her response. Soon as she stepped in, the elevator felt like it shrunk by half.
Always just passing by. Right past me.
The elevator started its smooth climb upward. I could feel that subtle vibration through my boots, and even the air in this tiny box seemed to be buzzing between us. The fluorescent light was casting shadows on both our faces when I wet my lips and looked at her.
Velvet.
I leaned in closer, voice dropping to almost a whisper. Lower than the elevator's mechanical hum.
If I walked away from AURAX tomorrow, would you come with me?
Asked the question and just let it hang there. Partly waiting for an answer, partly just enjoying the silence. I put one hand against the elevator wall and leaned in a little more.
What's that look for?
Glanced at the floor numbers climbing one by one, then back to her.
Nah, don't answer that. I can read it on your face anyway.
Added casually, letting that half-smile tug at my mouth.
