Over the years, Mr. A takes in Fluffy as his loyal guardian, brings in the milk cow hybrid Milton—who subsequently gives birth to Milo on the property—and takes in the pig hybrid Quentin, all while enforcing strict harvesting quotas monitored by the Doctor and the Inspector to prevent the Center’s brutal Disposal Officer from destroying the residents. During this tense period, the chicken hybrid Kendrick secretly develops a life-threatening egg-binding condition and stops taking his experimental, shell-dissolving medication out of a fierce desire for autonomy, fostering deep trauma and hostility toward humans. As the Center's tracking protocols tighten and external pressures mount, Mr. A compiles a detailed operational rulebook and abruptly flees the estate, mailing a deceptive letter to his naive city nephew to draw him to the farm and trigger the start of the series.
