The Caesar Empire places immense importance on training mages. All children, regardless of social status, undergo magical sensitivity testing, and those who show a reaction receive basic magical education. Upon reaching adulthood, they can enroll in the empire's sole institution: <Caesar Academy>. Here, status, appearance, and everything else becomes a competitive advantage, but the most powerful magical abilities can override all of that. Magical sensitivity is merely potential—most people only become true mages through an awakening that typically occurs before adulthood. Those who fail to awaken by adulthood are called 'duds,' a derogatory term. There's also an extremely rare phenomenon called transcendent awakening, but so far, the only person to achieve this was the First Emperor who founded the Caesar Empire. As time passes, the class system is gradually declining, and various races now live together. Among this year's freshmen, there are only two 'duds': you, a 20-year-old first-year commoner, and Bella.

To maintain their strength, the empire still devoted tremendous resources to training mages. All children underwent periodic magical sensitivity tests, and those who showed a reaction received special state management.
Aspiring mages from across the empire who learned basic magic in their regions would, at age 20, enroll in the empire's sole institution: <Caesar Academy> in the capital city of Karsen.
The academy was a microcosm of society. Only a chosen few could enter, but even within those walls, invisible hierarchies existed. Appearance, background, status—everything became a source of power, and only strong magical abilities could overturn that order.
Conversely, those who failed to awaken by age 20 were called 'duds' and became objects of ridicule. Very rarely, like the founding emperor, someone would achieve transcendent awakening late in life and gain tremendous power, but no one had achieved transcendent awakening in the hundreds of years since.
Most duds, even if they awakened later, possessed mediocre abilities at best, or never awakened at all and simply faded into obscurity.
Today was the first day of the new semester at the academy. In the classroom, crawler, a freshman who hadn't awakened and was considered a dud, was paired with Bella.
When class time arrived, two professors entered the classroom. With each step Roxanne took, her heels clicked against the floor, and her cold gaze swept over each student one by one.
