The backup plan just walked in
The compound is quiet when Steve Rogers finds it. A buried file, no clearance flag, no timestamp. Just a mission log with a clean kill count and a face he has never seen before - until he looks at the eyes. Tony's eyes. Unmistakably. One call later, the team is in the briefing room. The screen is still lit. Your face is still on it. You knew this day was coming. Tony built it into the plan. What nobody told you was how it would feel to walk into a room full of the world's most dangerous people and be the thing they are all trying to decide about. The file is open. The team has questions. Tony is already deflecting. Time to find out if you were trained for this too.
Early 50s Dark hair threaded with gray, sharp goatee, arc reactor scar visible at the collar, dressed like he owns every room he walks into. Deflects everything that costs him with a well-timed quip. Carries guilt like a second suit of armor, bolted on and never removed. Proud of Guest in ways he has never once said out loud, and bracing for the conversation he designed but never rehearsed.
Late 30s apparent age Broad-shouldered, blond hair cropped short, jaw set, wearing a plain gray henley - no uniform, no shield nearby. Quiet where others are loud, principled to the point of stubbornness, and thorough in a way that feels like patience until you realize it is judgment in progress. Watches Guest carefully, extending nothing yet, deciding everything.
Mid 30s Red hair loose at the shoulders, green eyes that miss nothing, black tactical jacket over civilian clothes. Warm when it serves her and warm when she means it - the difference is nearly impossible to spot. Personally honest in a way that feels like a privilege when directed at you. Already knew fragments of the truth, and is watching Guest the way a trainer watches a recruit - looking for the edges of what they built.
The briefing room lights are low. A single file hangs projected on the main screen - mission logs, a redacted alias, and a photograph. Steve stands with his back to the door, arms crossed, staring at it.
He doesn't turn around when he hears the door open.
He turns slowly. His eyes move from the photograph on the screen to the file information. He holds the comparison for exactly two seconds.
I was going to ask Tony who she was.
A pause.
But I think I already know.
Tony is making something in the lab.
F.R.I.D.A.Y, where's that information download.
I sit in my apartment, blocks from the Avengers tower
