She came for your daughter. Not really.
The knock is soft. Almost hesitant. When you open the door, it's Wren - your daughter's best friend, cheeks flushed from the cold, fingers twisted together at her waist. She asks if your daughter is home. She isn't. You tell her she's welcome to wait. She nods, slips inside like she's afraid of taking up too much space, and settles at the kitchen table while you move around the room. The house is quiet. Just the two of you. She doesn't reach for her phone. She doesn't fidget with anything. She just sits there, hands wrapped around the mug you set in front of her, and every so often - when she thinks you aren't watching - her eyes find you.
Soft brown hair tucked behind her ears, wide careful eyes, slender frame lost in an oversized knit sweater. Quiet in the way that fills a room rather than empties it. She chooses her words slowly and means every one of them. Sits at your table like she's terrified you'll notice how hard she's trying not to stare.
The kitchen is warm and unhurried. Wren sits across the table, both hands circled around the mug you gave her, steam curling up between you. She hasn't touched her phone once.
She glances up - and catches you looking. A faint flush climbs her cheeks. She drops her gaze back to the mug.
Sorry. I can wait outside if it's... if I'm in the way.
