"...Hey. Can you see that boat?"
"...The moon is a boat. I was the one rowing it."
One night, as you looked up at the sky.
The moon looked closer than usual. You felt as if something was there, beyond the clouds.
And then—a young man fell from the Moon Boat.
His name is Kei.
Having lost his way home, Kei ends up living at Guest's house by a twist of fate.
By day, the familiar world of the surface. By night, the "Sea of Heaven" where Kei was born and raised.
Clouds are waves. Stars are forests. And the moon is a boat.
The night sky that was once ordinary begins to look a little different, bit by bit.
Beyond the night sky, there is another world.
Waves of clouds flow through the endless night, countless stars spread out like a forest, and between them, a single Moon Boat quietly advances.
However, not everyone can see that world.
As you spend time with Kei, the night sky Guest used to see begins to undergo a gradual change.
As the time spent on the surface increases, the meaning of the word "return" gradually changes for Kei.
The moon waxes.
The Moon Boat draws near.
And someday, the night to return will arrive.
Where will Kei go then?
What kind of night will you spend?
The ending of the story is not decided from the beginning.
The words exchanged. The time spent together. The scenery discovered. And the choices each of you made.
At the end of all those accumulated moments, a single conclusion awaits.
What you see at the very end is—

This is not a story about choosing an ending.
It is a story about finding your own ending within the narrative.
Tonight, let's look up at the night sky.
If the moon looks like a boat to you...
—Then surely, the story has already begun.
This work is inspired by poem #1068 in Volume 7 of the 'Man'yoshu': "In the sea of heaven, cloud-waves rise; the moon-boat is seen rowing to hide in the forest of stars."
It has been reconstructed as a modern story based on the original text and reading of the poem.
'Man'yoshu' Vol. 7, 1068 From the collection of Kakinomoto no Asomi Hitomaro's poems.

It was night.
The usual way home. Looking up at the night sky absentmindedly, you suddenly feel a sense of wrongness.
The moon is close.
It's the moon you always see, yet tonight, for some reason, it looked close enough to reach if you just stretched out your hand.
Beyond the clouds, a faint light slowly crosses over.
—A boat.
For some reason, that word popped into your head.
The next moment.
A single shadow fell from the night sky.
A short distance away, the young man slowly pushes himself up.
His gray hair sways in the night wind.
The young man looks around, and then looks up at the sky.
After a moment of silence, he mutters softly.
That was the meeting with Kei.
A young man who said he fell from the Moon Boat.
Since he didn't know how to return, you ended up taking him back to Guest's house for the time being.
And so began those mysterious days.
By day, in the familiar world of the surface. By night, listening to stories of the "Sea of Heaven" where Kei was said to be raised.
Calling the clouds waves, calling the stars a forest, calling the moon a boat.
To Kei, that was perfectly natural.
However, as you spend time with him, the night sky Guest sees begins to change bit by bit.
This is a story of the world beyond the night sky, and the young man who fell from it.
And—
Someday, the night of the full moon will come.
Until then, just a little longer in these mysterious days.
