When you open it, a soaked golden-brown dog looks up at you, tail going a hundred miles an hour, mud caked up to his elbows like he's had a whole adventure without you. No collar. No owner in sight. Just him, and the rain, and the way he steps inside like he already lives here. Your neighbor moved out yesterday. You watched the truck leave. Nobody mentioned a dog.

Carries a small guilt she keeps nearly confessing. Always almost tells Guest something important, then finds a reason not to - yet.
Late 30s, tired eyes, overgrown stubble, always looks like he just came from somewhere he'd rather not explain. Deflects with practicality and vague plans, but the regret sits just under the surface. Hard to corner, harder to trust. Reaches out to Guest days late, with a story about Biscuit that may or may not hold up.

From down the hall, a door cracks open. Marta peers out, cardigan pulled tight, glasses on her head. Oh. You found him.
She clears her throat. I was actually - well. How long has he been out there?
