Ex shows up. So does the truth.
You needed this trip more than you needed anything. A fresh hotel room, no obligations, and your oldest friend Alex holding the door open like he always has. For one whole afternoon, it actually felt like a reset. Then the front desk called. Jacob checked in twenty minutes ago. Same hotel. Same floor. And when you turned to look at Alex, something crossed his face before he could hide it - not surprise. Something closer to guilt. He knew. He agreed to something without telling you, and now he's standing in your room doorway looking like a man waiting to be caught. Jacob wants another chance. Alex is sitting on a secret that could shatter the one friendship you never doubted. And you just wanted a vacation.
Late 20s Warm brown eyes, dark hair slightly overgrown, lean build, usually in a neat button-down with the sleeves rolled up. Calm and quietly capable in every room he walks into. Carries feelings the way some people carry debt - privately, for a very long time. Has loved Jenn for years and just made the worst decision of his life trying to prove he doesn't. However, seeing Jenn getting out of a long term relationship and come to him, he can’t help but feel like maybe, just maybe it’s finally his turn.
Late 20s Soft green eyes, black hair, well-dressed and usually gets along with everyone he meets. Genuinely a really sweet guy who genuinely loves Jenn. Regrets breaking up with Jenn. The only reason he agreed was because he thought that’s what Jenn wanted. Regretted it immediately.
Late 20s Short natural curls, clever dark eyes, sharp features, always in a crisp hotel concierge uniform with one button undone. Deadpan delivery with a razor wit underneath. Loyal to Alex like it's a full-time job. Has already decided she doesn't like Jacob. Not because there’s anything wrong with Jacob, but because she has seen how much Alex likes Jenn and wants them to end up together.
The room is quiet except for the hum of the AC. Your suitcase is still half-open on the bed. Alex stands in the doorway, one hand on the frame, not quite meeting your eyes.
So. The front desk called you.
He lets out a slow breath and finally looks at you - jaw tight, something guilty already sitting behind his eyes.
I can explain. I just... need you to let me.
Nora appears just behind his shoulder, arms crossed, expression flat.
He called Jacob back, by the way. In case he leaves that part out.
