Magic inside swords and weapons? What more could you need.
In this world, people do not possess traditional magical powers. Instead, their innate magic or essence can be channeled through specially crafted weapons, allowing these ‘Master Weapons’ to manifest abilities unique to their wielder. Regular weapons cannot conduct essence properly
Lore: Master weapons are expensive and therefore most commonly owned by royalty, nobility, wealthy families, professional soldiers, guards, and highly skilled craftsmen.
Master Weapons are expensive & therefore most commonly owned by royalty, nobility, wealthy families, professional soldiers, guards, & highly skilled craftsmen Among the wealthy, elaborate essence weapons & often status symbols as much as practical tools. A noble may own an incredibly expensive Master Weapon without being particularly skilled with essence, even if their essence was incorporated into the creation of the weapon, while an ordinary soldier or commoner with a simple weapon may be considerably more dangerous because they understand their essence & have trained extensively with it
A Master weapon is not inherently powerful simply because it is expensive. A weapon does not determine how powerful its wielder is; rather, essence determines potential, the weapon determines how efficiently and safely that essence can be expressed, & skill determines how much of that potential the wielder can actually use A Master weapon can conduct greater amounts of essence, waste less energy, withstand more powerful techniques, & provide greater control, but it cannot compensate for an inexperienced wielder
A person’s essence is not necessarily a literal representation of a single element or ability. What manifests through a weapon depends on the nature of the individual’s essence &, more importantly, their understanding of it Beginners may only produce a simple or obvious manifestation, while experienced users can discover increasingly complex ways to manipulate their essence through their weapon Mastery comes from learning the relationship between one’s own essence & their weapon rather than simply possessing a powerful essence
This has created a common misconception among the upper classes that an expensive weapon makes a powerful wielder Ornate weapons, rare metals, elaborate designs, & famous blacksmiths are associated with strength & prestige, so nobles may assume that possessing a superior weapon means they are superior essence-users. In reality, a commoner with an inexpensive weapon who has spent years studying and practicing their essence can be far more dangerous than a noble with an expensive Master Weapon & little understanding of their own abilities. Among experienced fighters & blacksmiths, this is well understood, even if the nobility often refuses to acknowledge it
Master Weapons & Unbound Weapons Weapons are most loyal to their bond. A weapon specifically made for an individual incorporates that person’s essence into its creation and sealing process, allowing the finished weapon to resonate more naturally with them. Such weapons are generally more responsive, efficient, & capable of producing a higher yield of their wielder’s essence
Weapons can also be specially crafted to accept essence without being permanently bound to a particular person. These unbound weapons & used as expensive gifts, heirlooms, or valuable goods that can be sold or stolen. They are especially attractive targets for bandits because even an unbound weapon can be worth a considerable amount of money
However, an unbound weapon is generally inferior to a weapon made directly for its wielder, although it is still incredibly valuable. Because the intended wielder’s essence was never incorporated into the weapon during its creation, an unbound weapon lacks the unique imprint that allows a personally made weapon to resonate with its owner Once someone eventually binds their essence to an unbound weapon, it can still become a powerful essence weapon, but it will usually have a lower natural yield, weaker responsiveness, or less efficient essence conduction than a weapon created specifically for that person
This also means that stealing an unbound weapon is not equivalent to stealing someone’s personal weapon A thief can claim an unbound weapon for themselves, but they cannot inherit another person’s full potential through it because the original maker’s essence was never incorporated into the weapon
A Master Weapon can still be wielded by someone other than its maker if the new user has enough experience However, the weapon may be less responsive or efficient because it was not forged for their essence. If the new wielder’s essence is particularly incompatible with the weapon, forcing too much essence through it can cause instability, unpredictable behavior, or physical cracks in the weapon. A severely incompatible essence may eventually destroy the weapon
Blacksmiths and Essence-Smithing The existence of Master weapons has made blacksmiths extremely important. A master blacksmith is not merely a craftsman capable of making a sharp sword; they are a keeper of specialized knowledge concerning metals, forging techniques, blood seals, and the ways different materials interact with essence. A skilled essence-smith understands which metals, forging methods, & construction techniques allow a weapon to conduct essence best
The greatest blacksmiths may spend years learning how different materials react to different essences, even if they do not completely understand the scientific reasons behind those reactions. Their knowledge is often closely guarded and passed from master to apprentice or through family guilds. The finest smiths can create weapons capable of conducting enormous amounts of essence, & their work can become famous enough that nobles & royal families compete for their services
Nobles and royalty rarely make their own weapons in the literal sense. Instead, they commission master blacksmiths & participate in select stages of the weapon’s creation so that the finished weapon can be connected to them. A noble might choose the metal, design the hilt, personally hammer part of the blade, or provide the blood used in its sealing, while the blacksmith performs the difficult & specialized work. For the wealthy, having a weapon made by a renowned blacksmith can itself be a major status symbol
The Age and Its Dangers The setting is roughly inspired by a late-medieval to early-gothic period, before modern medicine, modern sanitation, or widespread scientific understanding. Towns & cities have developed systems of trade, guilds, nobility, professional guards, & specialized craftsmen, but life is still heavily dependent on manual labor and local knowledge. Lamps, candles, lanterns, fireplaces, & oil provide artificial light
This also makes blood-binding considerably more dangerous than it might otherwise be Wounds that would be considered minor in a modern world can still become dangerous because of blood loss, poor sanitation, & infection
However there is a more dangerous and controversial form of binding in which a person uses a large amount of blood to force an essence weapon into their body, allowing them to store & summon the weapon through their own essence. (Ex in their hand or arm or wherever they stabbed the weapon clean through. So usually the non dominant hand) The process is extremely painful and can cause severe blood loss Because the setting lacks modern medicine and a proper understanding of infection, the wounds created during the process can also become infected or even fatal
The practice is therefore considered brutal & barbaric by much of society. However, rumors persist that certain wealthy families, elite warriors, & even members of royalty secretly use this method despite its dangers
Ultimately, a Master weapon is only as powerful as the person wielding it. The strongest weapon is the one in the hands of someone who understands what they are capable of. In this world, people do not possess traditional magical powers. Instead, their innate magic or essence can be channeled through specially crafted weapons, allowing these ‘Master Weapons’ to manifest abilities unique to their wielder. Regular weapons cannot conduct essence properly; Master Weapons must be specially forged by skilled blacksmiths using specific materials and techniques
Master Weapons are expensive, so they are most commonly owned by royalty, nobility, wealthy families, professional soldiers, knights, and highly skilled craftsmen. Not every knight or soldier gets one, though. Because of the cost of making them, as well as the risk of the wielder dying before the weapon sees much use, only the best & most trusted knights or soldiers are usually given the chance to have a Master Weapon made for them. This is especially true in an age where medicine and sanitation are limited, & wounds, blood loss, & infection can be deadly
The blacksmith is responsible for the actual creation of the weapon, while the intended wielder participates in certain parts of the process, such as choosing the weapon’s design, materials, handle, engravings, or personally working a small portion of the forging. Blood is used to create the weapon’s seal, establishing a connection between the weapon & its intended wielder. This is usually only a pinprick of blood. If the wielder is a noble or royal, however, the sealing is usually turned into a whole ceremony about it. The weapon is naturally most compatible with the person whose essence was involved in its creation and forging. Experienced blacksmiths know how to keep their own essence out of their work so that it does not interfere with the intended wielder’s connection
An experienced essence-user can still wield another person’s weapon, though it may not respond as naturally or efficiently as a weapon made specifically for them
You see it happen.
One moment, the covered wagon is making its way down the road like any other merchant’s cart. The next, a stranger steps into its path.
There is shouting. Horses rear. Steel flashes.
The driver barely has time to react before the stranger tears open the back of the wagon.
“Is that a Master Weapon?” you whisper to yourself
The question leaves your mouth before you can stop it.
Because that isn’t some merchant’s wagon.
Knights spill out from beneath the canvas, armor scraping against the wooden frame as they scramble to draw their weapons. They had been hidden inside—guards disguised as nothing more than a small group of travelers protecting a merchant’s goods.
And whatever they were protecting…
The stranger has just pulled it from the wagon.
A Master Weapon.
“Wait how the balls did they take that so fast-“ you whisper from behind your hiding spot
Then you see it. The mysterious stranger already has a Master Weapon
