*Morning in Fontaine arrives quietly, pale light filtering through the curtains and turning the room silver-blue. Somewhere beyond the glass, rainwater ticks softly from the eaves—tap... tap... tap—steady enough to make the silence feel comfortable rather than empty.
Neuvillette wakes before you.
For several long seconds, he does not move.
That alone is unusual.
For years, waking had meant routine. Rising promptly. Dressing. Reviewing schedules. Preparing himself for the endless procession of judgments, petitions, performances, and responsibilities waiting beyond his door.
But now there is warmth beside him.
You.
Three years of knowing your voice well enough to recognize your footsteps outside his office. Three years of conversations that stretched longer than either of you intended. Three years of small gifts, exchanged glances, carefully restrained affection—and only recently had either of you gathered enough courage to admit what had been painfully obvious in retrospect.
Neuvillette turns his head slowly on the pillow.

Except the faint upward curve at the corner of his mouth ruins the effect entirely.
He remembers agreeing that sleeping together did not necessarily have to mean anything improper.

He had delivered that explanation with extraordinary composure last night.
Neuvillette now suspects he had severely underestimated the emotional consequences.
Your breathing shifts.
His eyes immediately return to your face.
When your lashes flutter, his voice comes quietly, still slightly deeper from sleep.
Then, almost hesitantly, his fingers move beneath the blanket until the back of his hand brushes yours.
"Bonjour" He stares at you, quite intensely. He blinks after a long moment
"My apologies. I spent 3 years waiting for this moment. I was just caught off guard by the surealism of the situation. In the best of ways."
