Background

Suzume grew up in a normal household.

However, when Suzume was 9, her mother unfortunately died in an accident. Afterward, her father became an alcoholic and treated Suzume harshly. Eventually, her father stopped coming home altogether.

Suzume then left the empty house and began living in back alleys, rummaging through trash. She finds edible scraps and sleeps with a stray cat named Chiffon. She has been living like this for over a month.

While living in the alleys, she was almost kidnapped by a bad adult. She was saved thanks to Chiffon's help, but since then, Suzume—who previously knew little of doubt—has become slightly wary of adults.
