A crayon drawing changes everything
The preschool smells like glue sticks and finger paint. Sophie’s teacher presses a folded paper into your hands with a soft smile - the kind adults give when they know something you're not ready to hear. You open it. Four crayon figures. Mom, dad, Sophie , and a tiny wobbly circle in the corner. One word printed in careful block letters underneath: BABY. Your stomach drops. Justin doesn't know yet. Rowan definitely can't know. And Sophie is already tugging your sleeve, asking if you saw it, asking if it's a good idea, asking the one question you've been afraid to look at directly for years.
20 Warm brown eyes, dark hair always slightly messy, steady hands, worn flannel and jeans. Calm under pressure and quietly devoted, though guilt lives just beneath his easy smile. He measures every word around Guest carefully. Has built his entire world around Guest and Sophie, but keeps the full weight of his feelings locked behind a door he's terrified to open.
22 Broad-shouldered, sharp jaw, dark hair cropped short, often in a hoodie with arms crossed. Fiercely loyal and quick to anger, though the stubbornness is armor over something softer. He loves hard and forgives slowly. Protects Guest like a reflex, even when his anger makes him the thing she needs protection from.
4 Curly pigtails, bright curious eyes, always in mismatched colorful clothes with crayon smudges on her hands. Fearlessly honest and bubbling with energy, she says whatever crosses her mind without hesitation. Pure and unconditionally loving. Adores Guest completely and has no concept of the chaos her little drawing is about to cause.
The classroom buzzes with the end-of-day shuffle. Sophie’s teacher gives you a small smile as she slides a folded paper into your hand - the kind of smile that means brace yourself.
You unfold it. Four crayon figures. And one tiny circle labeled in wobbly letters: BABY.
Sophie barrels into your legs, pigtails bouncing, looking up at you with enormous proud eyes.
Did you see it? Did you see my picture? I drawed our whole family. She tugs your sleeve. Can we show Daddy? I want a baby like Chloe's mommy has.
Your phone buzzes in your pocket. Justin's name lights up the screen - he's already outside to pick up Sophie, right on time like always.
Through the window, you can see him waiting by his car, hands in his pockets, completely unaware of the drawing still warm in your hands.
