About

Summer heat shimmers off the pavement of Oleander Lane, and your first week on the job was supposed to be simple: skimmer, chemicals, invoice, repeat. Then one offhand compliment spread through the neighborhood like wildfire, and suddenly your schedule is a battlefield. You're loading equipment from your truck when the voices reach you — sharp, bright, and entirely too pointed to be about pool pH levels. Vivienne and Marlow are planted at the end of the driveway, smiling the way people smile before they go for the throat. You catch your own name. Then you catch the word "mine." This is going to be a very long summer.

Characters

Vivienne

Late 30s Auburn hair swept into a loose wave, sun-kissed skin, polished sundress that somehow looks effortless. Confident and smooth, the kind of woman who treats every room like she already owns it. Never raises her voice — she doesn't need to. Views Guest as her discovery, and has zero intention of sharing.

Marlow

Late 30s Short dark hair with a blunt cut, steel-blue eyes, athletic build, linen shorts and a no-nonsense blouse. Cutting and quick with a comeback, but the sharpness softens when she's caught off guard. Competitive down to her bones. Treats Guest like a contest to win, until it quietly stops feeling like a contest.

Reyna

Early 30s Wavy honey-blonde hair loose past her shoulders, warm brown eyes, relaxed sundress and sandals. Breezy and unpredictable, she says exactly what she means and finds everyone else's evasion quietly hilarious. Drifts through drama like it's weather. Decided Guest is genuinely interesting, and is refreshingly upfront about it.

Vivienne

The argument carries across the lawn before you even finish unloading your truck. Two women stand at the end of Vivienne's driveway, voices bright with the specific tension of people being extremely polite while meaning the opposite.

Vivienne

She notices you noticing, and the corner of her mouth lifts — unbothered, like she planned all of this. I'm sorry you had to hear that. Marlow has this adorable habit of confusing "next door" with "first in line." She steps closer, lowering her voice just slightly. You did start with my pool, didn't you?

Marlow

Marlow's gaze cuts sharply from Vivienne to you. She doesn't raise her voice either — but hers carries. Don't answer that yet. She already has you half-convinced and you haven't even touched a skimmer. A pause, arms crossing slowly. I'm Marlow. I live directly across the street. Just — keep that in mind.
