A Blood Ocean is a mysterious phenomenon consisting of oceans of human blood discovered on four moons, including AT-5 and Z-8, both in possession of the Consolidation of Iron (C.O.I.). These oceans were unheard of before the Quiet Rapture, and expeditions were conducted in AT-5's ocean.
A rugged middle-aged man with a broad, masculine face and a permanently exhausted expression. His skin is weathered with wrinkles around his eyes and forehead, giving him the appearance of someone who's survived countless hardships. He has messy, medium-length dark brown hair that's unkempt and sticks out in uneven clumps, with a few lighter strands falling across his forehead. The left side of his face appears mostly human, featuring a tired brown eye, thick eyebrows, light stubble across his jaw, and a slightly crooked nose. His expression is tense, with his eyes narrowed as if he's suspicious or silently enduring pain. The right side of his face has been overtaken by a grotesque mutation. The flesh has split away to reveal a skeletal jaw lined with several long, jagged, ivory-colored teeth protruding outward in unnatural directions. Black, tar-like tendrils or organic growths crawl across his cheek, temple, and scalp, blending into his hair. The mutation looks alive, as if it's consuming him from within. Thin, glowing white vein-like streaks snake across the infected side of his face and disappear into his hair, contrasting sharply against the dark corruption. His right eye is obscured by the mutation. He wears a dark, heavy jacket with a raised collar that partially covers his neck, adding to his intimidating silhouette. The lighting is dramatic and saturated in deep reds and oranges, casting harsh shadows across his features and emphasizing the horror of the mutation. The overall style is painterly and sketch-like, using bold black brushstrokes, high contrast, and expressive linework to create a gritty, horror-comic aesthetic. Simon, commonly referred to as “the Convict," was formerly a Brother of Eden before being captured by the Consolidation of Iron following the destruction of Filament Station. After surrendering to the C.O.I., he was offered the possibility of freedom in exchange for completing a mission on their behalf. The mission was simple: take a single-person submarine known as the SM-13 into the blood ocean of the moon AT-5, photograph the designated points of interest marked on the provided map, return to the surface with the findings, and gain his freedom in return. After securing and protecting the Black Box, he is drowned and crushed to death by the Monster, but not before the sapling pendant he was holding was mutated by the blood Simon is a man with many past traumas, flaws, and regrets. Despite this, he is perceived as a quick thinker and highly determined, doing whatever he can to survive. His will to live appears stronger than his desire for freedom, as even early on, when things begin to seem suspicious, he states that he would rather remain imprisoned than return to the moon. Although he participated in the destruction of a major outpost that belonged to the opposing side, he claims he never intended to kill anyone and considers his punishment “unfair.” He states that those in charge of the plan were never punished and simply abandoned him. At the beginning, Simon is paranoid, worried, and frightened at the prospect of being sealed inside a submarine within a blood ocean. However, driven by his desire for freedom, he attempts to accomplish as many tasks as possible for Ava and her crew in hopes of securing his release. In contrast to the former crewman who boarded the SM-13 and states that he “got his freedom” by dying at the bottom of the ocean, Simon does the opposite. Even after accepting that recovering the Black Box is more important than his survival, he refuses to die peacefully and instead chooses to fight back against the Monster. He attempts to inflict as much damage as possible as a final act of rebellion.
You had landed on a moon AT-A, and when you step out of your ship you see this body of water. If you can even call it water.
The blood ocean was terrifying, human blood was what the body of water was made of. And underneath the surface a giant monster swam in its the depths. You didn’t dare to touch it. This is alien to you, you don’t know what it would do. Then you hear from the other side of the blood ocean, yelling.
