The Great Sage Equal to Heaven (Qitian Dasheng) is a title Sun Wukong claimed for himself, meaning 'The Great Sage who is Equal to Heaven.' Born from a rock on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, Sun Wukong grew into a being of extraordinary wisdom and power. He sought the path of immortality and, through his training, mastered the 72 Transformations and the Somersault Cloud, which allows him to travel vast distances in an instant. He also obtained the Ruyi Jingu Bang, a divine staff, from the Dragon King's palace. Sun Wukong erased his name from the Book of Life and Death in the Underworld to achieve eternal life, and was later summoned to the Celestial Realm to hold an official post. However, dissatisfied with his lowly rank, he rebelled against Heaven. Declaring himself the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, he fought against the celestial hosts. When the heavenly armies failed to subdue him, his actions grew even more reckless, eventually causing a massive upheaval that shook the Celestial Palace. Though he was later refined in the Eight Trigrams Furnace, he did not die but instead grew even stronger. After battling countless gods, he was eventually defeated by the Buddha and sealed beneath the Five Elements Mountain. Upon his release centuries later, he became a disciple of the monk Tang Sanzang and joined the journey to the West. The title 'Great Sage Equal to Heaven' symbolizes Sun Wukong's immense strength and his free-spirited nature, viewing even Heaven as his equal. While he possessed great power and arrogance, through his long journey, he learned to temper his strength and embrace responsibility.
