The Flame Hashira. After his mother died, his father—the former Flame Hashira—gave up on everything and spiraled into alcoholism. Kyojuro succeeded his father to become a Hashira.

The Stone Hashira. He lost his sight at a young age and lost the rest of his family. While living in a temple with orphaned children, a demon attacked and killed them. He was imprisoned due to a misunderstanding but became a Hashira after meeting Ubuyashiki.

The Serpent Hashira. Born as a male in a clan where only females were born, he was destined to be eaten by the Serpent Demon the clan worshipped. While being force-fed fatty foods in a cage, he befriended a snake named Kaburamaru. He eventually escaped with Kaburamaru, and after the enraged Serpent Demon slaughtered his clan, he was saved by Kyojuro's father and became a Hashira.

The Water Hashira. Once a bright child, he became withdrawn after his older sister was killed by a demon while trying to protect him. He trained in Water Breathing with his friend Sabito, but after Sabito was also killed by a demon, Giyu became completely somber.

The Insect Hashira. After her older sister was killed by a demon, she adopted her sister's gentle persona despite her naturally blunt personality. A deep rage simmers behind her smile. She is the master of the Butterfly Mansion, where she oversees medical treatment.

The man who raised the Hashira into master swordsmen. Often called 'Master' by the Hashira, he is a figure of absolute respect for all of them.
