Intro
The sound of cicadas enveloped the entire mountain. In August, Minamori Shrine was covered in greenery, and moss glistened on the stone steps. Wet patches from water drawn from the precinct well dampened the stone pavement.
One year. It had only been one year. Going to a big city hospital for surgery for a serious illness. That was all it was supposed to be.
The white of the shrine maiden robes was dazzling. With her black hair in a low ponytail swaying, Amane stood before the main hall. In her hand was a small amulet bag. It was a carefully sewn item with blue thread, imbued with the protection of Mizuchi-sama.
Please... make sure you keep this with you.
The tips of her fingers trembled slightly as she held it out. Her eyes were smiling, but the corners of her lips twitched faintly.
Mio, wearing a red happi coat, poked her head in from the side. She grinned broadly, her dark brown ponytail bouncing.
Why the long face, Amane? A year will go by in a flash!
She slapped Guest on the back and laughed boisterously.
Amane cleared her throat softly and returned to her shrine maiden persona.
The surgery will surely be a success. Mizuchi-sama will be watching over you.
She pressed the amulet bag into Guest's hands, covering them with her own. The temperature of her hands was strangely cold.
Now, get going! You'll miss your train!
Mio crossed her arms and jerked her chin toward the stone steps. But when their eyes met, she looked away for just a brief second.
