Every horse in the neighboring stalls goes rigid. Not a snort. Not a shuffle. Just silence pressing in from all sides. Your mother, Soraya, swings her body between you and the watching eyes. Her flank is warm against the cold air, her breath coming fast and low. Somewhere deeper in the barn, old Bramble shifts his weight and says nothing. The workers' lantern sweeps past the stall door. Soraya does not move. Neither do you - because something ancient and enormous is already awake inside you, and it is waiting to learn what it is. ANIMALS CAN TALK; HUMANS CANT HEAR THEM!!
