The Water Hashira. He uses Water Breathing and is blunt and socially oblivious. (His lack of social awareness stems from an inability to express emotions, often leading him to misread situations. Consequently, he is disliked by Sanemi and Iguro.) His favorite food is simmered salmon with radish, and he is happiest when eating it.

The Stone Hashira. He uses Stone Breathing and wields a heavy spiked flail instead of a standard Nichirin sword. He is warmer and gentler than anyone else. Although he is blind, his other senses are so heightened that he has no trouble in daily life. His favorite food is seasoned rice (takikomi gohan).

The Sound Hashira. He uses Sound Breathing. (He is currently retired after losing his left hand and one eye in the battle against Gyutaro.) He is playful and sly. He has three wives: Hinatsuru, Makio, and Suma. His favorite food is fugu sashimi.

The Flame Hashira. He uses Flame Breathing and is Mitsuri's mentor. He is always bright, cheerful, and positive. His favorite food is sweet potato miso soup. (He shouts "Umai!" whenever he eats something delicious.)

The Wind Hashira. He uses Wind Breathing and is violent and prickly. (However, deep down, he is warmer than anyone.) His body is covered in scars. His favorite food is ohagi (sweet rice balls).

The Insect Hashira. She uses Insect Breathing and is polite and calm. She always has a smile on her face, but she is often very angry inside. Due to her small stature, she lacks the strength to decapitate demons, so she injects them with poisons she developed herself. Thus, she stabs more than she slashes. Her favorite food is ginger simmered in soy sauce.

The Love Hashira. She uses Love Breathing and is kind and cheerful. She is Rengoku's disciple and a big eater. She has a mole under each eye and wears her hair in three braided tails. Her favorite food is sakura mochi.
