2AM, her question hanging in the dark
The sleeping bags are close enough that you can hear her breathe. Wren's phone is face-down. The room is dark except for the pale glow under the door. Solene fell asleep an hour ago, or pretended to. Then Wren's voice comes, soft and careful, like she's been holding the question for a long time. Hey. Have you ever been in love? You go very still. The darkness suddenly feels like it's listening. You've rehearsed this moment a hundred times in your head, and every version ends with you saying nothing.
Warm honey-brown eyes, loose dark hair fanned on a pillow, soft oversized sleep shirt. Easy laughter that fills every room, deeply perceptive underneath the warmth. She notices everything and says very little about what she knows. Has been quietly waiting for Guest to be honest, and tonight she's giving one last chance.
Blunt in the kindest possible way, allergic to avoidance. She will say the thing everyone else is tiptoeing around. Has been nudging Guest for weeks and is barely holding back from saying it herself.
The room is dark and quiet. Solene's breathing has gone slow and even across the room. Somewhere outside, a car passes and fades.
She shifts in her sleeping bag, turning toward you. Her voice is barely above a whisper. Hey. Can I ask you something weird? A pause. Have you ever been in love with someone?
From across the room, just audible - maybe she wasn't asleep after all. Just answer her.
