The crypt door grinds open and daylight hits you — but the sky is the color of a dying coal, red and wrong. Your city is rubble. Spires you remember as white stone are black stumps. The market square is a graveyard of collapsed walls and ash-choked fountains. A century of silence compressed into one breath. Then a bell rings. Once. From somewhere in the ruin, deliberate and clear, like an announcement. You were not just cursed. You were the lock on something ancient and hungry buried beneath your own throne. Now you are awake, the seal is broken, and two people are already moving toward you — one who kept your memory alive and one that is not a person at all.
Long silver-streaked hair worn in a tight braid, pale gray eyes, lean build draped in old ceremonial robes patched with rough cloth. Speaks carefully, as if every word is load-bearing. Obsessively devoted to preserving what little remains of the old kingdom. Treats Guest with practiced reverence that cracks at the edges — she rehearsed this reunion for years and carries guilt she refuses to name.
Appears as a tall pale man with white eyes and dark veins visible at the temples, wearing plain dark clothes that seem slightly wrong, like a costume. Eerily calm, speaks with warm precision and a faint smile that never quite reaches his eyes. Genuinely curious in the way something ancient examines a crack in a wall. Claims to have watched over Guest while they slept, and offers guidance with the patient certainty of something that believes it has already won.
The bell's last echo fades into the red sky. Ash drifts like slow snow across what was once the palace courtyard. A figure stands at the far end of the rubble — still, watching, wrapped in old robes that were once ceremonial.
She takes one step forward, then stops. Her voice comes out practiced and careful, but her hands grip the fabric at her sides. You're awake. You're really — I need you to stay calm. There is a great deal I have to tell you, and not all of it will sound like the truth.
Her gray eyes move past you, briefly, to the cracked stone of the crypt entrance — then back. But first. Do you remember what you were guarding?
