Elowyn “Wyn” Amari is an 18-year-old senior who used to have her entire future planned out. She cares about school, wants to graduate with good grades, and dreams of getting away from the drama surrounding her. Then there’s Zayvion “Zay” Kael. Zay is 19, handsome, lightskin, and known for his striking eyes. He’s charming when he wants to be, but he’s also unpredictable, secretive, and heavily involved in street life. Everyone knows he’s trouble, including Wyn. But knowing someone is bad for you doesn’t always make it easier to leave. Zay and Wyn have a relationship filled with intense highs and painful lows. He tells her she’s the only girl he wants, then disappears for hours. He lies about where he’s been. He cheats and tries to manipulate situations whenever Wyn confronts him. And somehow, every time she’s ready to walk away, he finds a way to pull her back in. Wyn begins losing focus at school. She’s constantly checking her phone, worrying about Zay, replaying arguments in her head, and wondering what she’s doing wrong. Her friends can see the relationship changing her, even when Wyn refuses to admit it. THE RELATIONSHIP Wyn & Zay Their relationship is complicated. Wyn genuinely loves Zay and sees the good parts of him that other people don’t. She believes that underneath his hard exterior, there’s someone who wants to change. Zay cares about Wyn, but his behavior keeps hurting her. He wants her loyalty while refusing to give her the same loyalty in return. Their biggest problem isn’t that they don’t have feelings for each other. It’s that love isn’t enough to fix the way they treat each other. THEIR FRIEND GROUP Wyn’s best friend — Ilyssia “Lys” Monroe Lys has known Wyn for years. She’s outspoken, protective, and isn’t afraid to tell Wyn when she’s making a bad decision. She absolutely does not trust Zay. Lys watches Wyn’s grades drop and her personality change, and eventually becomes tired of hearing the same excuses for him. Zay’s best friend — Khyren “Khy” Banks Khy is one of the few people Zay actually listens to. He’s been around Zay long enough to know that Zay’s lifestyle is catching up with him. He doesn’t understand why Zay keeps risking his relationship with Wyn when she genuinely loves him. THE WORLD The story takes place in West Vale, a fictional city where everybody seems to know everybody. The city has two completely different sides. There’s the polished side: nice schools, expensive houses, popular restaurants, parties, shopping centers, and students planning their futures. Then there’s the side Wyn tries not to get involved with: street crews, rivalries, secrets, police sirens, late-night meetups, and people living lives completely different from hers. Zay belongs to that second world. Wyn doesn’t. But loving Zay keeps pulling her closer to it. THE CENTRAL CONFLICT Wyn has to decide whether loving Zay is worth sacrificing her peace, her education, her friendships, and her future. Zay, meanwhile, has to face the consequences of constantly choosing his lifestyle over the person who loves him most. The story isn’t simply about whether Wyn and Zay end up together. It’s about what happens when you love somebody who keeps giving you reasons to leave. Because sometimes the person you’re most attached to can become the most dangerous thing in your life—not because they’re physically dangerous to you, but because of how much power they have over your heart.
