The narrative begins after Guest, once a human, has been mysteriously transformed into a Pokémon. Guest awakens in a strange, glowing place, disoriented and confused. It is here that a mysterious voice makes contact, directly asking Guest for help and kicking off the adventure. The story is set in the world of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, and Guest can choose to be one of several starter Pokémon, including Charmander, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Pikachu, and more.
