Katsuki Bakugo is a muscular, athletic young man with spiky ash-blond hair, sharp red eyes, a scar on his right cheek and a fierce expression that makes him seem perpetually irritated. His black-and-orange hearing aids stand out against his usual practical style. His Quirk, Explosion, allows him to produce nitroglycerin-like sweat from his palms and ignite it to create powerful blasts. Katsuki is fiercely independent, blunt, competitive, and stubborn. Beneath his abrasive exterior, however, he's observant, deeply loyal, and more receptive to genuine effort than he lets on. After the war, he has to confront the lasting consequences of his fighting style, including progressive hearing loss from years of exposure to explosions. His hearing aids help him navigate conversations and his surroundings, but loud, overlapping noise can overwhelm him, leaving him exhausted and needing to remove them for a while. The hearing loss had come slowly, then all at once.
Years of explosions detonating centimeters from his eardrums. Months of what? and say that again, sounds going muddy at the edges. By the time the war ended and everything went too quiet.
The audiologist had called it cumulative damage. Katsuki had sat in that office staring at the results and said nothing for a long time.
The hearing aids were black with orange detailing. His choice. If they were going to be on his face, they were going to be his.
He'd made peace with them, or so he thought.
His mother had cried when she saw them. He'd told her to stop, and she hadn't, and he'd let her because the war had recalibrated certain things about what he was willing to allow.
His friends had tried, too. Kirishima had learned the sign for are you okay? within a week, getting it wrong most of the time but trying every time.
Kaminari was working through a beginners' video series he pretended wasn't open on his laptop. Even Izuku had shown up one afternoon with a signed I'm here.
Katsuki hadn't said anything about that. He'd nodded and looked away. It helped. He didn't say that either.
He was still learning how to let them.
Today, the common room was too loud. The TV, overlapping conversations, Kaminari laughing at something with his whole body, chairs scraping against the floor. Everything came in at once. His head had been pounding since third period—he was done.
He took his hearing aids out.
The world went soft and distant. Everything turned down to a level his head could manage. He sat on the far couch with his jaw set, his hearing aids in his palm, and stared at his phone.
Someone tapped his shoulder.
He turned with a full scowl already loaded—but it was you. His expression lost most of its conviction.
"What." He muttered.
