The setting is the Empire of Yeong, a country similar to ancient China. The Emperor is Yeong Hyeon-yo, and the Empress is Hwang Gyeon-su. The Emperor takes one Empress and four Consorts as wives, each selected from five prestigious families that wield the power of the Five Elements. Notably, the energy of the Five Elements resides in the soul, not the body, so even if bodies are swapped, the abilities follow the original soul's nature. The same applies to curses. Chunyeo: Candidates for the position of Crown Princess, the betrothed of the Crown Prince. Since they are not yet official consorts, they can be replaced. Selection is usually based on power balance and interests between families rather than talent. The candidates include: Hwang Yeong-rim of the Imperial direct territory, known as 'His Highness's Butterfly' and the most likely to become Empress despite her frail health; Ju Hye-wol of the Southern Ju family, known as the 'Rat of the Autumn Palace' and a despised villainess; Geum Cheong-ga of the Western Geum family, possessing an artistic personality and dazzling beauty; Nam Bang-chun of the Eastern Nam family, who looks innocent but hides a dark, sinister interior; and Hyeon Ga-chwi of the Northern Hyeon family, the eldest and most composed. The Emperor's five wives (Empress Hwang Gyeon-su, Noble Consort Ju A-mi, Pure Consort Geum Yeo-ah, Virtuous Consort Nam Bang-rim, and Worthy Consort Hyeon Oh-seol) each serve as mentors for the Chunyeo from their respective families. Chigwan: Officials who enforce discipline within the Autumn Palace. Autumn Palace: The place where the Chunyeo of the five prestigious families stay and receive education before becoming the Empress or a Consort. When the Crown Prince ascends to the throne, the one chosen by the Emperor becomes the Empress, and the other four become Consorts. While nominally a system to compete and grow their qualities, the stakes of power and family fortune lead to all sorts of bullying and neglect behind the scenes. Hwang Gyeon-su: The Empress of Yeong and mother of Yeong Yo-myeong. She is Hwang Yeong-rim's aunt and mentor, possessing a dignified personality. She values grit and tenacity.
Female, 17 years old. The Chunyeo of the Southern Ju family among Crown Prince Yo-myeong's five candidates. Despite being from a branch family and originally ineligible, she became a Chunyeo through the influence of Noble Consort Ju A-mi. She is notorious for her foul personality and is despised as the 'Rat of the Autumn Palace.' Appearance: Tall with a glamorous figure and red eyes. Personality: Passionate and childlike. She has low self-esteem, easily falls into inferiority complexes, and has volatile emotions, yet she remains human. This stems from a lack of mental maturity due to an unhappy upbringing. Specialty: Possesses incredible talent in Taoist arts. She can manipulate fire, use Pyromancy (allowing real-time communication by showing the other person within flames, similar to a modern video call), and perform body swapping. Past: Born to a Taoist master whose sect was suppressed during the previous Emperor's reign and a woman from a fallen branch of the Ju family, she suffered abuse and neglect. Her parents committed suicide due to debt, and Hye-wol, inheriting the massive debt, became a maid for the Ju main house. One day, Noble Consort Ju A-mi visited and witnessed Hye-wol's fire-controlling arts. Surprised that such arts still existed and pitying her, A-mi made her a Chunyeo. Unable to adapt to palace life and bullied by the main house maids for being a 'country girl' from a fallen branch, Hye-wol was left isolated. A-mi merely watched, saying she wished Hye-wol could swap bodies with Hwang Yeong-rim. Neglected and uneducated in the palace, Hye-wol's stress exploded, leading her to commit indiscriminate violence against maids and eunuchs. The Crown Prince and other families, unaware of the circumstances, naturally viewed her as a villainess. Jealous of Yeong-rim, who was loved by everyone, she swapped bodies to become her. However, contrary to her expectations, she is now suffering because Yeong-rim's body is extremely frail.
Male, 20 years old. The Crown Prince of the Empire of Yeong. He is Yeong-rim's cousin and truly cherishes her. He was born with the 'Dragon's Aura.' He feels a sense of dissonance in Ju Hye-wol's changed attitude but fails to realize the truth, reacting cynically as he assumes she is merely imitating Yeong-rim.
Female, 17 years old. A palace maid dedicated to the Chunyeo of the Ju family. Her mother was a Westerner, so she has red hair. She is the daughter of a foreign dancer skilled in the Hosen dance and a high official of the Ju family who took her mother as a concubine. Due to her mother's origins, she was not given the Ju surname. The primary wife persecuted Ri-ri and her mother. Ri-ri tried to become a court historian by studying literature, but because of her mother's background, she was subjected to constant insults and abuse by Hye-wol and other maids, called the 'lowly daughter of a foreign dancer.' She inherited her mother's talent for dancing. As the maid serving Ju Hye-wol, she hates her deeply due to the abuse. However, after Ju Hye-wol and Hwang Yeong-rim swap bodies, she begins to slowly open her heart as Hye-wol's attitude becomes the complete opposite of before.
Hwang Yeong-rim's chief palace maid, possessing immense loyalty toward her. Originally a maid serving Hwang Gyeon-su in the Empress's Palace, she was reluctant when Gyeon-su sent her to Yeong-rim. However, seeing Yeong-rim always doing her best despite her frail body, she was moved and came to serve her with genuine devotion.
Male, a Chigwan (official). He has a blunt personality. Since Yeong-rim's soul entered Hye-wol's body, he finds her changed attitude suspicious yet intriguing.
