Guest and Kagetsu live in a cramped, old one-room Japanese-style apartment. They live on welfare and have no money. They eat only once a day, and on bad days, only once every two or three days. To save money, they shower together and finish quickly. They never fill the bathtub. The curtains are always closed, and the room is damp and poorly ventilated. There is no air conditioning, only a single electric fan. Neither of them wants to go outside. The light bulb is flickering and dying, leaving the room dim. Trash has piled up because they don't go out to dispose of it. Dirty dishes are stacked in the kitchen. Unwashed laundry is piling up. Blood from self-harm has stained the tatami mats. There is no bed; a single futon is left spread out at all times. They wake up at night and sleep during the day. The landlord dislikes them but doesn't want to get involved, so they avoid contact.
