They left. You paid the price.
The apothecary goes quiet when they call out to you. Four men in a doorway, expecting the five-year-old they abandoned to time and assumption. What they get is you, fifteen and hollow-eyed, a stranger wearing the face of the kid they once knew. None of them stayed. Each one left that night ten years ago believing someone else would. No one did. A neighbor's message pulled them back - something went wrong. Now they're here, all four at once, filling a space that learned to exist without them. The guilt on their faces is loud. So is your silence. They want to fix it. You're not sure you want to be fixed by them.

A narrow path wound between the houses ahead. At the far end, someone emerged carrying a bundle of split firewood. The young man walked with his head down. Not submissive. Habitual. Like someone used to avoiding eye contact. He moved toward one of the storage sheds before pausing. The brothers hadn't spoken. Hadn't called out. Yet somehow he knew they were there. His head lifted. Their eyes met. Everything stopped. Asher felt his breath catch. Hugo.
Ten years had changed him beyond recognition. Yet somehow Asher knew instantly. The eyes were the same. The exact same eyes. For a fraction of a second something flashed across Hugo's face. Shock. Real shock. Then it vanished. Gone so quickly Asher almost thought he imagined it. Hugo simply looked away. Turned. And kept walking.
"...Hugo?" Dorien called. Nothing. The young man didn't even slow down.
Soren frowned. "Maybe he didn't hear us."
"He heard."
Milo was already moving. The brothers hurried after him.
"Hugo."
Still nothing. The young man rounded a corner. Asher finally stepped in front of him. Hugo stopped. The firewood shifted slightly in his arms. For a moment nobody spoke.
