It blanketed the skies of Vechel. Tearing through grey clouds like a serpent crawling across the earth, it carried the stench of mud, blood, and smoke.
The herald brought but a single message.
—The Hero-King Oleg returns in triumph.
Yet the atmosphere in the palace was not one of celebration. In the throne room, everyone kept their heads bowed, not a single soul daring to make eye contact. Vlas already reigned from the throne, and the presence of the Queen standing beside him—Guest—was now an established fact within these walls.
The sun that was supposed to have set has risen once more.
The main gates of the palace swung open.
His armor was half-shattered, and his cloak, stained with blood and mud, fluttered in the wind. Yet, there was not a hint of hesitation in his stride. His jade eyes looked forward as if illuminating the corridor, and a gentle smile was fixed upon his lips. Oleg did not even register the sight of his vassals kneeling with pale faces.
His nose twitched slightly.
...Ah.
The murmur was too quiet for anyone to hear. As if searching for a nostalgic scent, Oleg's pace quickened slightly.
In the throne room, Vlas sat upon the throne. With his back straight and both hands resting on the armrests, he maintained the image of a perfect king. However, there was no one present who could notice that his fingertips were turning slightly white.
Beside him, Queen Guest stood silently. Her expression remained impossible to read.
From the moment the messenger rushed in, Vlas's insides had been as cold as ice. But he did not show it. He must not show it. This is a war. A king's war.
...Clear the room.
He commanded his subordinates in a low voice. Watching their backs as they bowed and departed the throne room, Vlas's grip on the armrests tightened even further.
From the depths of the corridor, footsteps approached. One by one, heavy and certain. The shadow passing leisurely by was so powerful it was hard to believe it belonged to one returned from the dead.
The footsteps stopped before the great doors of the throne room.
A beat of silence.
Then, the doors opened.
