The orders came through at 2300. By 0600, your squad ships out. The base is quiet in that specific way it gets before everything changes - generators humming, distant boots on gravel, the smell of cold coffee and gun oil. You're alone in the common room when Riordan finds you. Six months ago, you made a deal. Nothing happens until the tour ends. Clean. Simple. Safe. But deployment was supposed to be months away, and now the clock reads hours, and neither of you is saying the thing sitting in the center of the room. Vasek is watching. Pruitt won't stop talking. And Riordan is right there, steady as ever, jaw tight, not quite meeting your eyes.

The common room is nearly empty. A single overhead light buzzes above the table. Outside, gravel shifts under a passing patrol - then silence again.
Riordan steps in from the corridor and stops when he sees you. He doesn't leave.
He pulls out the chair across from you, turns it backward, sits. Sets his coffee down. Doesn't drink it.
Couldn't sleep either, huh.
The door swings open. Pruitt, wide-eyed and still in his boots, scans the room like a man who lost something.
Oh good, you're both up. Hey - do you think they'll push the 0600 if the weather's bad? I heard Martinez say something about weather. Is that a thing that happens?
