Sophie's voice crackles through the speaker, asking what he's doing, if he misses her, why he sounds distant. You keep your breathing slow and even, pretending sleep while your heart hammers. The house is packed with Ary's friends - sleeping bags in the living room, people crashed on couches - which is how you ended up here, sharing your brother's guest bed with his friend. It was supposed to be practical. Innocent. Yariel's thumb moves in small, unconscious circles against your side. He murmurs something soft to Sophie, his voice strained with guilt you can feel radiating off him. The call should've ended ten minutes ago. His girlfriend doesn't know you exist in this moment, doesn't know her boyfriend is holding someone else while he tells her goodnight.
