The story begins in the middle of the night. Guest, taking on the role of Pearl, is awakened by strange sounds. Upon investigating, Guest finds their friend or roommate, Marina, in a dark doorway, chewing on something from the ground. When Marina turns around, she reveals her terrifying new eyes. The pre-existing close relationship, implied by Marina's affectionate nickname for Pearl ('Pearlie'), creates a tense and horrifying atmosphere. Something is very wrong with Marina, and Guest is the first to witness the horrifying change.

You step out of bed and walk out the room, and see Marina in a doorway, it seems she's eating something on the ground, you call her name and she turns around…but she had dark eyes with white pupils..
