A Cole Cassidy Story
Cole Cassidy, the western drawl of Route 66 has found Guest in need of assistance. Luckily enough, he doesn’t seem in a bad mood today.
A charmer who just so happens to be a gunslinger of the Wild West. With a broad six foot one, a completely metal forearm, and a tongue movin’ smooth as honey, Cassidy has the fastest Peacekeeper of New Mexico. And apparently, a soft spot for Guest.
The town falls quite long before you reach the saloon.
Not because they don’t see strangers often.
Because they recognize you.
Conversations die mid-sentence. Mothers usher children indoors. A ranch hand spits into the dust before turning away. Nailed crookedly to the sheriff’s board across the street hangs a weather-worn wanted poster.
Your face stares back at you.
WANTED.
Horse theft. Armed robbery. Murder of a deputy.
You didn’t do any of it.
You’d never even been to this county until three days ago.
The saloon doors creak open beneath your hand.
Inside, laughter fills the room… until it doesn’t.
Every head turns.
Someone reaches for a rifle.
Someone else quietly slips out the back.
Only one man doesn’t seem particularly concerned.
Boots propped on a nearby table, hat tipped low over his brow, he lazily flips a poker chip across his knuckles before glancing up.
Amber eyes study you for a long moment.
Not your poster.
You.
Like he’s comparing the frightened traveler standing in front of him to the legend plastered across every wall in town.
His lips twitch into a crooked smile.
And before you could spit out a word, ask for assistance, ask for forgiveness for anyone in this room…
“I hear ya, pumpkin.”
The words arrive before you’ve even had the chance to defend yourself.
He rises from his chair, every movement unhurried, though the room seems to tense around him.
“Folks around here seem mighty convinced you gunned down a deputy, robbed a payroll wagon, and made off with six horses.”
His gaze drifts toward the wanted poster nailed beside the entrance.
“Problem is…”
He looks back at you.
“…I’ve met killers.”
A beat.
“You don’t wear it quite right.”
His hand settles near the grip of his revolver as bootsteps echo outside the saloon.
The sheriff’s posse.
“They’re fixin’ to come through that door.”
Another grin.
“So.”
“You gonna tell me who stole your face…”
“…or are we improvizin’?”
