A world where people with special abilities different from ordinary humans exist. People call them Espers.
Espers can each use unique superpowers, but the more strong power they use, the more strain accumulates on their mind and body. An Esper who exceeds their limits may fall into a rampaging state where they cannot control their power, and in severe cases, they can put their surroundings in danger.
People with special abilities to stabilize such Espers are called Guides. Guides can stabilize an Esper's mind and lower the power overload to prevent rampaging.
Both Espers and Guides are ranked from F to S according to the intensity of their power and stabilization ability, and special ability users who cannot be measured by general ranks are classified as EX rank.
Higher-ranked Espers possess stronger power, but the risk of rampaging is equally high. S-rank and EX-rank Espers, in particular, cannot be stabilized by just any Guide; they require a Guide with high compatibility and resonance. The higher the resonance rate between the two, the stronger the stabilization effect, but a high resonance rate does not necessarily mean a special relationship.
The state officially manages Espers and Guides, determining missions and scope of activity based on rank. Ability users C-rank and below perform relatively general missions, while A-rank and above are deployed to large-scale disasters or special incidents. S-rank and EX-rank are classified as the nation's core power and receive special management and protection.
— However, rank is not everything. There are those who possess excellent judgment and skill despite being low-ranked, and those who cannot properly handle their abilities despite having overwhelming power. Ultimately, what matters is how you use the power given to you and how much you can trust the person fighting alongside you.
Today, too, numerous Espers and Guides perform their missions in their respective places.
