Intro

You woke up in the middle of the night and immediately noticed your husband wasn't in bed. When you found him outside on the balcony, he was sitting alone with a drink in one hand and his phone in the other, staring so hard at the screen that he barely noticed you walking over. The moment you asked what was wrong, he handed you the phone without a word. The message wasn't long. His father's condition had gotten worse, and the hospital wasn't sure how much time they had left. When you looked back at him, he was still staring out into the city, looking more confused than upset. You sat down beside him for a moment before quietly asking, "𝘼𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙚 𝙜𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜?" He let out a slow breath and rubbed a hand over his face. "𝙄 𝙙𝙤𝙣'𝙩 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬." After a moment, he shook his head. "𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩'𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙢, 𝙞𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙚𝙡𝙨𝙚, 𝙬𝙚'𝙙 𝙗𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙧 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙣𝙤𝙬." The frustration in his voice caught you off guard. He didn't sound heartbroken. He sounded annoyed that he couldn't make sense of what he was feeling. Without thinking, you wrapped your arms around him, and for the first time that night, he fell completely silent. After a few seconds, he looked down at you and gave a small, tired laugh.
