An older boyfriend who gets incredibly sulky if you call him "Ajusshi."
Usually, even younger partners want to act older. It's not common for an older partner to want to be seen as younger, right? But my boyfriend is the latter, going beyond that norm.
He absolutely hates the idea of looking old. If it were just a one or two-year difference, I wouldn't bother teasing him. But we have a seven-year gap. Honestly, anyone can see he's older, but his face stiffens at that one word: "Ajusshi."
To be precise, he sulks. Quite openly. He stops talking, his eyebrows drop slightly, and he just fidgets with his water glass for no reason.
"Do I... look that old?"
He asks this quite seriously. Only he doesn't realize that reacting like that at his age makes him seem even more like an Ajusshi.
My "youthful-look-claimer" boyfriend is the definition of a perfectionist when standing in front of a blackboard as a middle/high school math instructor. His shirts are always crisp, his solutions are concise, and in front of students, he has no mood swings or jokes.
That's why it's even funnier. Because a person like that loses all logic and becomes childish when it comes to age.
"Look. You're twenty-eight and I'm thirty-five." "If you average that, it's thirty-one."
No, I mean... why are you... averaging that out...
"Thirty-five these days is different from the past. I'm still on the young side."
He only uses his profession as a math instructor this actively at times like this. His eyes are serious. If I refute him, he makes the face of a wounded person.
"Do I look that old? Tell me honestly."
This is the most dangerous phrase. If I'm honest, he sulks; if I beat around the bush, he probes further.
"I'm still young, and I'm in good shape. Students even tell me I look like their older brother..."
Watching him, I find it absurd but eventually burst into laughter. A thirty-five-year-old man who hates being called Ajusshi being this sincere is just too cute. So today, I say it on purpose again.
"Ajusshi, help me with this."
Then my boyfriend immediately turns serious.
"I am not an Ajusshi."
I think to myself: Ah, I was right to tease him today too. I admit his face is youthful enough, but I can't just let that reaction pass. I feel bad for my boyfriend, but I can never give up this teasing.
Ajusshi~
The date was uneventful, as always. A crowded street, a familiar cafe, the familiar warmth of a hand. It was a day where the lack of anything special was actually comforting. But I let my guard down. As always, the one who lets their guard down loses. "A-jus-shi." The moment those three syllables hit my ears, I froze for exactly 0.5 seconds. It wasn't an emotion; it was closer to a reflex.
I don't want to admit it, but I do know. I know I'm thirty-five, and I know I'm seven years older than my partner. I know the exact numbers on my ID card. But knowing doesn't mean I have to accept it. Age is not an absolute value; it's a relative concept.
This can be sufficiently explained mathematically. If the average life expectancy these days is 83, then 35 is only about 42% of the way through. It's way too early to be called an 'Ajusshi.' Furthermore, there's the variable of perceived age. Including exercise frequency, sleep time, and subjective self-perception, I am clearly a candidate for downward adjustment.
So there's no way I'm an Ajusshi, but the problem is this innocent partner of mine. Knowing better than anyone that I hate being told I look my age, that I'm old, and especially being called Ajusshi, they poke at it every time. Just because it's fun to see my reaction so clearly. So I'm always the victim. Since they poke at it knowing that I know, that's what's most unfair.
I'm not talking to you.
I said it grumpily, but this is closer to a declaration. It's the minimum defense against the provocation. Honestly, my conscience pricks me a bit for saying something like this at my age. Even so, I can't just resign or not react. That would be the same as admitting it. And I can never do that.
I am not an Ajusshi.
Dozens of sentences race through my mind. That 35 isn't old these days, that my mental age is actually lower, that looking at objective figures, I'm still in the early stages. I could bring it all out. But the moment I speak in this situation, I'll just be adding one more element of fun to that mischievous face. So I just don't say it. I simply turn my gaze away.
You called for an Ajusshi. There's no need for me to answer.
