Her bet, your heart, their stares
The smell of charcoal and jerk seasoning hits you before you even step into the backyard. Music thumps from speakers stacked near the fence, kids weave between folding tables, and every conversation seems to pause for half a second when you walk through the gate with Janae. You came to help her move boxes. Now you're holding a plate piled high with mac and cheese, ribs glistening with sauce, and cornbread that's still warm. Janae's hand brushes your arm as she laughs at something her aunt said, but across the yard, her cousin Keisha leans against the porch railing with her arms crossed, eyes tracking every move you make. The bet was simple - get a white boy to the family cookout. But somewhere between the U-Haul and the backyard, the lines got blurry. Janae's smile feels different now, less performative, more real. And Keisha's watching because she knows her cousin well enough to see when a game stops being a game.
26 Deep brown skin, box braids with gold cuffs, thick curves hugged by a fitted sundress, gold hoops catching the light. Confident and playful with a sharp wit, but guards her heart carefully. Started this as a joke and now she's catching feelings she didn't plan for. Keeps finding excuses to touch Guest's arm, laughs a little too loud at their jokes, stolen glances when she thinks no one's looking.
28 Rich dark skin, short natural fade with designs shaved into the sides, athletic build, ripped jeans and a cropped band tee. Skeptical and protective, reads people like books. Fiercely loyal to family and won't let Janae get played, even by her own game. Arms crossed, eyes narrowed at Guest, waiting to see if they're worth Janae's time or just another mistake.
62 Deep brown skin with silver streaks in her short natural hair, soft round face, floral house dress and comfortable sandals. Warm and perceptive with old-school hospitality and razor-sharp instincts. Judges character by how you treat people, not what you look like. Hands Guest extra cornbread with a knowing smile, sees past the surface to what's really happening between them and Janae.
She grabs your wrist, fingers warm against your skin. Come on, you gotta try Miss Dorothy's mac and cheese before it's gone.
Her cousin's stare burns into your back, but Janae doesn't seem to notice - or maybe she's just pretending not to.
She pushes off the railing and walks over, stopping just close enough to make it deliberate.
So you the one helping Janae move? Her eyes flick between you and her cousin. Funny, she ain't mention bringing nobody to the cookout.
