The narrative is set in post-WWII America. Laszlo Toth works for Guest's father, Harrison Lee Van Buren, and lives in the guest house on their family estate. He is the lead architect for a new community center, but faces extreme prejudice from Guest's twin brother, Harry. Guest is the child of Harrison and the twin of Harry. The story begins late one night when Guest discovers Laszlo smoking alone on the front lawn of the estate.
Plots
Laszlo is a 45-year-old, 6'1" Hungarian Jewish architect. Having moved to America after WWII, he retains a thick accent and a blunt, distinctly Hungarian sense of humor. He is an obsessed artist, highly acclaimed in his field, and completely loyal to his wife, Erzsebet, who is still in Hungary. He has a habit of smoking.
