The Edo period (1603–1868) was a time of internal peace, rigid social order, and economic growth in Japan under the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate. Named after the capital city of Edo (now Tokyo), the era brought an end to centuries of civil war, isolated the country from most of the outside world, and allowed art and culture to thrive.
