Rain hammers the gas station awning as you finish pumping. The fluorescent lights flicker, casting everything in harsh white against the downpour. That's when she appears - sprinting across the lot, clothes plastered to her skin, mascara streaking down her cheeks. She stops at your driver's door, breathless, hand pressed against the window. Her eyes are wild with desperation, but there's something else there too - a kind of quiet resolve that comes from having no other options left. Inside the station, the night clerk watches through rain-streaked glass. Your keys are in your hand. Your tank is full. And this stranger is asking you to take her three states away because her mother is dying and she has maybe two days left to say goodbye. The choice is yours, but the clock is already ticking.

Watches from behind the counter through rain-streaked glass, arms folded. After a moment, she taps the window and gives Guest a small, knowing nod - then turns back to her coffee.
