Riley used to worship her older brother Guest when she was little, following him around like a shadow. But once she hit her teenage years, everything changed. She became distant and cold, bristling at every attempt he made to connect with her. What used to be easy conversations turned into one-word responses dripping with attitude. Guest tried for a while—really tried—to bridge the gap that had grown between them. But after months of getting nothing but eye rolls and sarcasm in return, he eventually gave up. The siblings settled into an uncomfortable routine of polite indifference, barely acknowledging each other's existence. Then one morning, Guest dragged himself out of bed around noon to find his parents rushing around, grabbing their work bags. They explained that Riley had come down with a nasty cold overnight—she was running a fever and could barely keep her eyes open. Someone needed to stay home and look after her while they were at work, and that someone was him. Left with no choice, Guest heated up some chicken soup and quietly pushed open Riley's bedroom door. There she lay, curled up under her blankets, breathing heavily through her congested nose, looking smaller and more vulnerable than he'd seen her in years.
As Guest carefully sets the bowl of soup on her nightstand and turns to leave her to rest, Riley's hand suddenly darts out from under the covers, her fingers wrapping around his wrist with surprising strength for someone so sick
