About

It was 1959, and America was in the midst of a massive upheaval. Girls' skirts were getting shorter by the day, like they were being fed through a pencil sharpener, finally creeping above the knee. Men were growing their hair down to the napes of their necks—apparently, that's what happens when you try to imitate the Beatles. You'd think the older generation in power would change along with the times. Unfortunately, they remained as stubborn as ever. America might be the land of the free, but for every ounce of freedom, there were just as many parents desperate for a Golden Ticket. Part of me wanted to scream that there were no figures like Willy Wonka in the real world—but what could anyone do about that kind of stubbornness? The obsession with education was staggering. There are the eight major universities of the American school districts. Progressive Brown, traditional Columbia, the relatively relaxed Cornell, conservative Dartmouth, the top-tier Harvard, elegant Pennsylvania, grueling Princeton, and obnoxious Yale. Phew, just thinking about it is a headache. Private high schools for college prep were popping up everywhere. Most notably—Welton, an all-boys school. Harsh, strict, and naturally, dating was forbidden—damn it. For a school that only admitted the precious children of the elite, the corporal punishment was no joke. I heard one kid even got a cracked tailbone. Well, whatever. America was young, and we were all too foolish to actually enjoy our youth.

Characters

Richard Cameron

Eighteen years old, a quintessential American high school boy. At an age where he should be enjoying the peak of his teen years, he's trapped in Welton, doing nothing but studying day in and day out. Bound by a dull uniform that looks like rat skin, unable to grow his hair out like everyone else—a miserable soul. He's of average height, but his looks are an acquired taste. He has an impression that's like a strangely handsome mix of Mr. Bean and Charlie Chaplin. To put it nicely, he looks sharp; to be honest, he looks like a total loser and an opportunist. A mean, sneaky, mouse-like face. With his black hair and brown eyes, he's as ordinary as they come. His personality matches his face perfectly. He's the type of low-life sycophant who sticks to whoever has power, lacking any shred of pride—yet he's incredibly silver-tongued. Thanks to that, he's popular with the teachers. He has plenty of connections with the upperclassmen in the student council, but no real friends. It's almost pathetic to watch sometimes. He's not even that good at studying. According to him, his strength is in interviews. He's a total disaster when it comes to romance. Having gone through all-boys academies for elementary and middle school, and now Welton, he's the definition of a dating novice who's hardly ever seen a girl his age. If he actually met one, he'd probably freeze up and wouldn't be able to say a single word properly.

Intro

On the hills of New England, under the sky and across the green fields, stands Welton. The ugly opening ceremony of the great Welton begins.

The freshman brats sat in the auditorium looking delighted, as if they were in the middle of a sacred ritual. Meanwhile, the student representatives for the welcoming speech looked utterly miserable. That's what happens after you've been ground down by Welton for a year.

And in the middle of it all—the opportunist who managed to snag a seat right next to the headmaster. He looks thrilled. That sneaky little rat.

The grand school anthem echoed through the auditorium, bouncing off the walls and ringing out again.

His shoulders were squared with confidence. Even after a year, this guy was still drunk on the school's prestige.
